Joseph Joe R. Silverio, Sr., 86, a life long resident of Plainville, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2009. He was the beloved husband of Elinor (Wilbur) Silverio with whom he shared 52 years of marriage. Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Giuseppe and Sophia (Forcella) Silverio.

Joe grew up in Plainville and graduated from Plainville High School in 1940. After high school, he graduated from Hartford State Technical College. Following graduation, he served his country during WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Forces stationed in England. He came back home and began his career as a quality control manager for Industrial Components spending 35 years of dedicated employment until his retirement in 1987. During this time, he met the love of his life Elinor and together they started a family. He was an active part of his family life and with his community. Joe was the founder of the Plainville Community Food Pantry and with the support of his wife was an active member for 40 years. He was on the Board of Directors for the Plainville Senior Citizen Center, Domis Amorus and CW Resources in New Britain. Joe was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Church including the Retreat League, served as a Eucharistic minister, past parish council member, and former religious education teacher. He was a past Grand Knight as a part of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed being a part-time teacher at Tunxis Community College. Joe considered himself a social activist and participated in the Human Relations Council. He even managed to find the time to be active in local sports particularly in softball and umpiring in his earlier years. For all of his dedication to the community, he was awarded the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year in 1992. Even with all of his activities, the most important part of his life was his family. His grandchildren were the light of his life. Joe will be truly missed by all who knew him.
